Appropriate disposal of poultry litter is a continuous challenge to industry, regulatory officials, and local decision makers in many states because of its enormous supply and the impact it has on the environment. Researchers have been examining how poultry litter could be used as biomass for energy production in the United States.

While poultry litter is considered an excellent source of organic nutrients for crop production, the amount of litter produced in a particular region is often too much to be applied to available land and can result in nutrient pollution of soil and water.
