Just past the first-year mark, the Terminal Island Renewable Energy (TIRE) project is producing results that are surprising to some in the biosolids industry.

For the 5-year pilot taking place in San Pedro, Calif., anaerobically digested liquid biosolids and wet cake from Los Angeles’s Hyperion Treatment Plant are reslurried to 5% and injected into a 5000-ft-deep well with a four-layer concrete barrier.
