Butt Can Demo ProjectsCigarettes are made of a plastic, cellulose acetate, that is environmentally persistent. They are the most littered item in America with about 176 million pounds of cigarettes collected in beach clean-ups each year. Although only 19% of the Massachusetts population smokes, according to the United Health Foundation, a 2007 survey by the Mass Department of Public Health's Tobacco Control Program revealed that 68% of 18-24 year olds that attend music events, clubs, and bars regularly report that they smoke daily or on some days. Not only do cigarette butts litter beaches all over Salem Sound Watershed, but they excrete more than 60 toxins that harm or adversely affect marine life and are found in the stomachs of birds, turtles, whales, and fish.
